Tooth extractions are commonly used to address tooth decay, gum disease, and other forms of tooth damage. Removing the compromised tooth provides a clean slate for life-changing restorations, like dental implants. However, the extraction process can seem daunting, and patients often go into it with significant trepidation.
Understanding exactly what to expect before, during, and after a tooth extraction can give you confidence going into the procedure. Read on for our complete overview!
What to Expect Before a Tooth Extraction
Before a tooth extraction, your teeth and gums will be evaluated. They’ll also take X-rays to examine the damage in greater detail. If an extraction is the best treatment option available to you, you’ll need to prepare by:
- Fasting as advised by your provider
- Quitting smoking (ideally permanently), or at least 12 hours before the procedure and one full day after
- Dressing comfortably for the procedure in something you wouldn’t mind getting stained
- Asking a friend or family member to drive you home from the procedure
What to Expect During a Tooth Extraction
During a tooth extraction, you’ll first receive general or local anesthesia to numb the area around the affected tooth, eliminating any pain during the procedure. Once the area is numb, your provider will gently remove the tooth from the gums, making incisions to gain access to the tooth if required. The socket is then disinfected and, if desired, bone graft material may be placed to facilitate healing and curb jawbone loss.
Your provider may also stitch the area closed to help it heal. You’ll be asked to bite down on gauze to curb bleeding.
What to Expect After a Tooth Extraction
After a tooth extraction, you can return home. You’ll be advised to avoid physical activity for at least 24 hours and eat only soft or liquid foods for three to five days. Most tooth extractions take seven to 10 days to heal, although more complicated cases may require three to four weeks to heal completely.
